The risks from manual handling may be reduced by the design of the workplace. This may include things such reducing the distance between work station to minimise the distance a load is carried or ensure the travel route is clear of obstructions.  Work stations could be set at waist height with all tools, equipment and materials placed in front of the worker within easy reach.

The load can also be redesigned to minimise the risks. Grab handles could be fitted to the load to make it easier to grip the load. It may also be possible to break the load down into smaller sections to reduce weight and make it easier to handle.
