Equipment Inspection

It is good practice to carry out equipment inspections to ensure equipment is still safe for use and to prevent equipment failure. For access equipment and equipment used to lift people it is a legal requirement for an inspection to be carried out. Inspections should be carried out by someone trained and competent.

Inspections may include:

  • When it is first erected and before first use
  • After substantial alteration
  • At suitable intervals, e.g. weekly
  • After circumstances that may have jeopardised the safety of the work equipment such as major modifications, suspected damage, change in the nature of use
  • Pre use inspection
