Mechanisation

This involves the use of equipment to aid in manual handling. This includes powered load handling equipment and manually operated handling equipment.

Powered Load Handling Equipment

This includes plant such as Fork Lifts, Cranes and Powered Hoists. This equipment uses a power source to do a majority of the lifting and carrying. However, they do not completely remove the need for manual handling as the load may still need human input.

Manually Operated Load Handling Equipment

Although this equipment is still operated manually it helps to reduce the risks of manual handling. This includes equipment such as pallet trucks, sack trolleys, hoists, chutes and handling devices. For example, using a pallet truck still requires the operator to pull and manoeuvre the load but the amount of effort required is considerably less than not using the pallet ruck.
