Roof Work

Roof Work

In construction, almost 1 in 5 deaths involve roof work. Working at height on a roof carries a high risk of accident if it is not adequately planned and sufficent precautions are taken.

Particular danger arises from:

  • Sloping roofs
  • Fragile Roofs

Sloping roof are those with a pitch greater than 10 degrees. The risk increases with a sloped roof as a worker may slide and accelerate of the end of the roof. The material and surface of the roof significantly influence this hazard.

A fragile roof is one that has not been specifically designed to carry a load other than the forces imposed by the weather. Skylights, asbestos, cement, plastic or glass are all roof materials likely to break under the weight of a person.
