 Step 1 – Identifying Hazards

One of the most important aspects of your risk assessment is accurately identifying the potential hazards. Identify what it is about the activities, processes, equipment, plant or substances used that could injure or harm someone.

There are a number of resources that might help you identify hazards:

  • Check manufacturers’ instructions or data sheets for chemicals and equipment
  • Look back at your accident and ill-health records
  • Speak to other workers about the hazards they have identified
  • Think about long-term hazards to health
  • Visit HSE website as they publish practical guidance on hazards and how to control them
