The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA)

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. One of the key aspects of this legislation is it sets out the general duties of employers and employees.

Employer’s must provide:

  • Safe plant and systems of work
  • Safe use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances
  • Adequate information, instruction, supervision and training
  • A safe place of work with safe access and egress
  • A safe and healthy working environment and welfare arrangements

Employees Must:

  • Take responsible care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions
  • Cooperate with the employer so they can fulfil their legal duties
  • No person shall intentionally or recklessly interfere with anything provided within the interest of health and safety
