The Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) 1992 is a key peace of legislation that set’s out duties for the employer and employees in regards to manual handling.

Employers duties

The Manual Handling Regulations set out a hierarchy of measures that employers must follow to prevent and manage the risks associated with manual handling. These are:

  1. Avoid manual handling operations, so far as reasonably practicable
  2. Assess the risk of injury to workers from any manual handling operations that can’t be avoided
  3. Reduce the risk of injury to employees from manual handling operations. The risk should be as low as reasonably practicable

Employees duties

Follow any systems of work that have been put in place to comply with these regulations.
