Unprotected Edges

Unprotected Edges

An unprotected edge is any edge that is open. Scaffolds, roofs, access platforms, the top of excavations may all have unprotected edges. An unprotected edge hugely increases the likelihood of a fall. This is especially true if you have to work next to or pass an unprotected edge to carry out your work. It’s very easy to become complaisant and overlook the dangers of unprotected edges. A step in the wrong direction, reaching or being pushed over an edge whilst manoeuvring materials are all easy errors to make that may lead to a fatal fall.

Not only does an unprotected edge pose a risk of a person falling from height but they also allow equipment, materials and tools to fall over the edge. This poses a great risk to anyone or anything below.
